Tmux Config Generator: Build Your .tmux.conf Online

TL;DR — pick your options, copy the generated file to ~/.tmux.conf, and reload with tmux source-file ~/.tmux.conf. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

~/.tmux.conf

Save the file as ~/.tmux.conf and reload with tmux source-file ~/.tmux.conf. Most options apply immediately, but default-terminal only affects windows created afterwards, and after changing focus-events clients should be detached and attached again (see tmux(1)).

What each option does

OptionWhat it does
Prefix keyThe chord before every tmux shortcut. Ctrl+a is popular with GNU Screen converts and Emacs users, Ctrl+Space is the common escape for shell users; the cheat sheet shows every shortcut as Ctrl+b, so keep the default while learning if you follow along with it. Custom values must be tmux key names (C-a, C-Space, C-\); keys the config parser treats specially, such as C-\ and C-;, must be quoted in the file (set -g prefix 'C-\').
Mouse modeWheel scrolling, pane clicking, divider dragging. Hold Option/Shift while selecting to use your terminal's own copy.
24-bit true colorDeclares tmux-256color and enables Tc overrides, so themes render exact colors in modern terminals instead of the nearest 256-color approximation.
Scrollback historyLines kept per pane; 10000 is comfortable without much memory cost (tmux's own default is 2000). Since tmux 3.7 a changed limit also applies to existing panes; on older releases only panes created afterwards get the new limit, so restart the server to apply it everywhere.
Base indexWindows and panes numbered from 1 so the top-row keys match; also enables automatic renumbering after closes.
Vi copy modemode-keys vi for hjkl movement in copy mode; the generated file also binds v to start selecting and y to copy-and-exit (stock tmux uses Space and Enter for that, with v as block selection).
Status barPosition and refresh interval; the interval redraws the whole status line (clock, window flags) and does not touch pane content — 0 disables periodic redraws. Every config sets a session name on the left and a clock on the right.
Pane bordersThe style dropdown picks accent colors or heavy 3.2+ border lines (a theme plugin manages border colors when one is active); the toggle shows each pane's index and running command above it, which makes multi-pane layouts self-documenting.
Themes (via TPM)Ten plugin presets (Dracula, Catppuccin, Tokyo Night, Rose Pine, Kanagawa, Everforest, Gruvbox, Nord, One Dark, Solarized). The generated file ships with the TPM bootstrap: clone TPM once with git clone https://github.com/tmux-plugins/tpm ~/.tmux/plugins/tpm, reload, then press prefix + I inside tmux to install the theme. Pick None and the TPM block is emitted as comments, so the config runs without any plugin. Tokyo Night needs more than TPM on its own — it expects Nerd Fonts v3+ and bash 4.2+, plus jq and playerctl if you enable its optional widgets, so an unpatched terminal will show missing glyphs in the status bar. Catppuccin targets tmux 3.2 or newer and draws its own status icons, so it needs a Nerd Font as well. For deeper styling, see Theming & Customizing.
